St. Nicholas "Hellenic Orthodox Community of Massabesic Lake" Manchester: A brief history
The history of our parish dates back to 1931. Greek immigrants primarily from Kalambaka and Kastraki in Meteora region. The community pulled their modest resources together in order to build a small Greek school for their children. At that time, the neighborhood Greeks surrounding current day St. Nicholas, would take the trolley on Sundays to the St. George parish, before the parish moved to the current location.
Overtime, the families decided to continue building with the help of a very humble mortgage. In 1933, the first priest was sent from the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese, then of North and South America, to St. Nicholas (lovingly known by parishioners as St. Nick's) in Manchester.
The parish continued to grow. The families that helped raise the parish from the ground raised their children and grandchildren within our community. Now, their grandchildren are raising their own children and grandchildren in our parish. Truly this is a beautiful legacy.
We have a special relationship with Hellenic College Holy Cross in that a number of our clergy have been professors and administrators at HCHC, while serving St. Nick's. Although we are one of the smallest parishes in the Metropolis of Boston, but we have a full liturgical, ministry, and event cycle.
We lovingly open our doors to the surrounding community, Orthodox and non-Orthodox alike, to "come and see" St. Philip beckoned St. Nathaniel.
May the intercessions of St. Nicholas, our patron and protector, bless you and yours!
